1782 Santa Barbara Pioneer
Luís Manuel Quintero was born at Guadalajara, New Spain (México), about 1735. He was a tailor by profession and of African descent. He married María Petra Rubio at Alamos, Sonora, about 1760. María was also of African descent. When his three eldest daughters married soldados de cuera ("leather jackets") bound for Alta California with Capitán Fernando Rivera y Moncada's expedition, Luís enrolled as a Los Angeles Poblador at Alamos on February 3, 1781, and departed with the expedition in April. That is how Luís and his family came to be present at the founding of el Pueblo de la Reina de los Angeles during the Summer of 1781. Not long after he received his settler's plot, Luís requested permission to be released from his contract in order to continue on with the expedition to establish Santa Bárbara. His request was granted and he left Los Angeles in March 1782 and joined the march to Santa Bárbara, where he resumed his trade as a tailor. Luís was buried in the Santa Bárbara Mission Cemetery January 17, 1810 (BP Death 00133).
