Torval J. Lillevold was born in Greenfield Township, La Crosse County, Wisconsin, a few miles northwest of the village of Coon Valley. He was baptized Sunday, Dec. 9, 1877, at Upper Coon Valley Lutheran Church, in Coon Valley. La Crosse Co. birth records give his name as "Torval J. Lillevold," while the church baptism record gives his name as "Thorvald Julius" (no last name, but son of Jacob and Kari Olsen). His first name was also spelled Thorwald. He probably moved with his parents from the Coon Valley area to near Prairie Farm (Sheridan Township, Dunn County, Wis.), between 1886 and 1888.

Torval homesteaded the south half of the northwest quarter and lots 3 and 4 of section 2, Lee twp (T155N, R38W of 5th PM), Beltrami Co., Minn. (about 6 miles east of Grygla, which is in Marshall Co.), and raised his family there. He married Thone Bratteli, Friday, 11 Sep 1914. They had seven children. After her death, he married Lena Sulland, Tuesday, 28 May 1957.
