John Crill, 89, of 1501 St. James Court, Winfield, died July 3, 2000, at Walnut Hill Nursing Center in Winfield.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Oak Hill Cemetery in Elk City.

A memorial has been established with the World War II Veterans Memorial. Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service.

Crill was born April 25, 1911, in Garfield County, Okla., to Mable (Bardwill) and Horace Mack Crill. The family moved to Lyons when he was two and he graduated from Lyons High School in 1934. Following graduation he began working for the Gulf Oil Corp.

In 1943 he joined the United States Navy and served in the South Pacific during World War II. Following his discharge in 1946, he continued his employment with Gulf Oil Corp. and retired in 1974 following 44 1/2 years of service.

On June 28, 1947, he married Neva Baxter in Howard. After his retirement, they moved to Havana Lake in Caney and then to Winfield in July 1994.

Crill was a member of the First Christian Church, American Legion Post 129 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3184, all of Lyons, and the Elks Lodge in Cheyenne, Wyo.

Survivors include his wife, Neva Crill, Winfield; a stepson, Gene Balding, Russellville, Ala.; a brother, Earl Battershell, Lyons; a sister, Marie Bean, Magalia, Calif.; and two stepgrandsons.
