About 1860 David and Martha moved to Potomac, IL in large part because his uncle (his father's brother) Aaron Mercereau Layton was living there with his wife, Charlotte, and their children. According to a history of Potomac, David managed a ditching machine (for his uncle Aaron?) when they first came to Potomac and "by economy and industry" eventually acquired 160 acres of land northwest of town where the family lived, farming and raising livestock. David and Martha had 4 children, all born in Potomac: Charles "Charley" (1861), Anna Elizabeth "Annie" (1863), Coburn Grant (1865), and William Mersereau "Willie" (1868). Martha and David died just 3 months apart - she on May 16, 1904 and he on Aug. 22. (Bio provided by K. Gregg Prillaman)
