He was a member of McKinney Cove Baptist Church. He was retired from Henredon Furniture Company and a former employee of Henline – Hughes Funeral Home, Arthur was a Veteran of The United States Army where he served in WWII. He was a former member of VFW Post 8060, an active member of the Mitchell County Republican Party, the U. S. Government Mica Program. He was also the former Tax Collector for Mitchell County NC, and owner operator of Gateway Market in Bakersville, NC.
Survivors include his daughter Janie Ayers, and son Ricky Ayers both of Bakersville, NC, five grandchildren, Kandra Mooney, Randy and Rodney Rowe, Todd and Rebecca Ayers, seven great grandchildren, Ethan Rowe, Grace and Josh Mooney, Dustin, Danielle, and Zaiden Ayers and Zeus Ponder, one great great grandchild, Hallie - Mae Ayers.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Merle Ayers, one sister Bessie Callahan, brothers,Edgar, Floyd, and Kelly Ayers, and Ernest Birchfield.
Funeral services will be held Monday, March 28, 2011 at 8:00PM in McKinney Cove Baptist Church with Todd Ayers, Don Stafford, Phillip Murdock, and Don Ford officiating. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service. Interment will be Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at 11:00AM at McKinney Cove Baptist Church Cemetery with The North Carolina Honor Guard conducting graveside military honors.
