Obituary Xenia Gazette June 11, 1890:
Mr. Alven Austin Winans, son of the late Judge J. J. Winans and Mrs. Caroline E. Winans, of this city, died at his home in Cedarville at half past twelve o'clock this morning, after a prolonged and heroic struggle for life against that insideous foe of mankind, consumption. He was attended in his last moments by his faithful wife and brother, James Winans, of this city. Mr. Winans was a young man with a vigorous intellect, and as editor of the Cedarville Herald and in other journalistic capacities had shown marked ability as a writer and thinker. He was born in Xenia, Feb. 10th, 1863, and lived here until recently when he married and took charge of the Herald. He learned the printer's trade in the office of the Xenia Evening Herald, afterwards working in the Item office, run by his brother James, and since working at the case and on the reportorial staff of the Democrat News and other Xenia papers, being at one time editor of the Home Weekly. He was married to Miss Rose Owens, of Spring Valley, O., Jan. 1st, 1889, by whom be had one child, a little daughter, the wife and daughter both surviving him. The funeral will occur at one o'clock to-morrow, Thursday afternoon from his late residence, the services to be conducted by Rev. W. Q. Shannon. Burial in the family lot in Woodland cemetery in this city.
.....Shortly after his death, his young daughter died. His widow, Rose, remarried a man with the last name of Garlington and moved to Richmond, Indiana. She died rather young and had no more children.
