Shorty was born in Texas in 1929. He enlisted in 1945 at the age of 16. His twin brother Vurner (Big Boy) also enlisted at the same time. He lied about his year of birth in order to enlist. Daddy was 29 years old when he was killed in an auto accident. He lived for 5 weeks before finally dying, he never woke up from the coma. He was married to Frances Lovell in 1950. They had 3 children, Lesley Alan Carey, Glenda Sue (Susie) Carey and Twila Carey Bennett who died in 2010.
