Charles (Carl) Konecny, 83, of Mariners Harbor, a lifelong Staten Islander and a retired technician, died Thursday at Clove Lakes Health Care and Rehabilitation Center in Castleton Corners.

Born in Castleton Corners, he moved to Port Richmond in 1949 and settled in Mariners Harbor in 1964.

Mr. Konecny was a technician for the former Wallerstein Co., a chemical plant in Mariners Harbor, for more than twenty years, retiring in 1972.

He attended Curtis High School.

He was a member of the West Brighton and Mariners Harbor senior centers.

Mr. Konecny enjoyed singing and playing the piano.

He sang the National Anthem on Arbor Day for the past nine years at the West Brighton Senior Center. He also sang at the Clove Lakes facility for three years in the late 1990s when his son was a patient.

Mr. Konecny served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, achieving the rank of staff sergeant. He was stationed primarily in England, and took part in the Battle of Normandy.

He was a parishioner of St. Michael's R.C. Church, Mariners Harbor.

He was predeceased by his son, Charles Jr., who died in 1998.

"He was a good father and husband," said his wife of forty-nine years, the former Emelia Rispoli.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sisters, Johanna Clark and Frances Bryan.

The funeral will be held tomorrow from the Matthew Funeral Home, Willowbrook, with a Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Michael's Church.
Burial will be in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
