Mrs. Ida "Mae" Gamble Lucas, 91, of Bartlesville and formerly of Hominy, died at 11:47 a.m. Saturday, March 26, 2011, at the Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville. Mae was born at Rowe, Oklahoma, on Nov. 7, 1919, the daughter of William Solomon Tibbs and Ida Theora (Carnes) Tibbs.
She began her education near Kansas, Okla., and the Osage oil boom town of Denoya. She then attended Prairie View School in Seminole County, where she was a passionate player on the girls' basketball team, played cornet in the band, and graduated from high school in 1938. She moved to Oklahoma City, where she lived with her sister, Pearl, and met her future husband, Walt.
On Sept. 5, 1939, Mae married Walter Robert Gamble at Shawnee, and they made their home in Oklahoma City. Pursuing his career in the oil business they also made their homes in Illinois and Corpus Christi, Texas. In 1952 they left Oklahoma City and came to Hominy, to make their home when Walt opened the Baker Oil Tool Branch Office. Mae was active in Hominy community affairs including Epsilon Sigma Alpha of which she was a charter member. She participated in March of Dimes, the Republican Party, a Cub Scout den mother, and she was active in Boy Scout and Girl Scout activities. Additionally, she was a dedicated high school band parent and was instrumental in the fundraising effort for the city swimming pool. Mae was in the bowling league at Hominy, where she was the first woman to roll a 200 game at the Hominy Holiday Lanes. Mae enjoyed playing games with her family. She was an avid pitch player who was still beating her family members until the end. An enthusiastic sports fan, Mae loved OU and OSU men's and women's Basketball, college and professional football. She had been an active member of the Hominy United Methodist Church, participated in the BOK Activities Center Bridge Group in Bartlesville, and as much as possible was active in attending her grandchildren's various activities.
In later years, while living with her daughter and her family, she lovingly kept close tabs on her three grandsons. Mae was employed as the bookkeeper at the Bill Fallin Ford dealership in Hominy for many years until her retirement. Also, Mae and Walt worked together in their oil business. Walt preceded her in death on Jan. 12, 1972.
She later married Lloyd Lucas and they were active in quarter horse and thoroughbred horse racing in Raton, N.M., at La Mesa Park. She returned to her home in Hominy in 1987, and then moved to Bartlesville in January of 1997.
Survivors include two daughters, Judy Gamble, and Carol Martin and her husband Jimmy; one son, Richard Gamble; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; her nieces and nephews to whom she was a special aunt; her special friend and caregiver, Joetta Hines; and her son-in-law Jimmy's family.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, George Tibbs and Roy Tibbs; and four sisters, Effie Peyton, Pearl Cole, Mildred Evers, and Alma June Tibbs.
Services for Mrs. Lucas were held Tuesday, March 29, at the Hominy United Methodist Church, with Rev. David Mingus officiating. Interment will be in the Albert J. Powell Memorial Cemetery at Hominy, directed by the Stumpff Funeral Home and Crematory. Casket escorts will be her grandsons: Neal Boatright, Boyd Gamble, Jarod Martin, Wes Martin, Evan Martin and great-grandson Rob Ryals. Honorary casket escorts include Jimmy Martin, Bob Ryals, Tom Stroup, Jim Evers, Zach Bouchard, Alec Downing, Tyler Downing, and Oren Adams.
