SHARPLES Jerry A. Sharples, age 65, of Columbus, Ohio died Saturday, August 10, 2002 at The Ohio State University Medical Center from complications related to a brain tumor. He was born May 21, 1937 in Lucas County, Ohio the son of Oshea and Bernice (Barnes) Sharples. He received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from The Ohio State University and his Ph.D. from Iowa State University. After spending 16 years in the Department of Agriculture at Purdue University, he moved to Washington, D.C. where he worked with the U.S. Department of Agriculture with an emphasis in Agricultural Trade Policy until his retirement in 1996. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church where he was active in the Chancel Choir. He was also a member of the Upper Arlington Silver Bears Softball Team. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Ross Sharples. Jerry is survived by his wife of 44 years, Marjorie Sharples; daughters and sons-in-law, Marilynn and Rob Stubbs of Indianapolis, IN and Cindy and Tim Walter of Austin, TX; son and daughter-in-law, Stephen Sharples and Kathy Bruce of Northville, MI; grandchildren, Christen, Michael, Daniel, and Andrew Stubbs, Ben and Peter Walter, and Anna and Reece Sharples; brother and sister-in-law, Bruce and Dorothea Sharples of Ind.; sister, Joyce Smellie of Tucson, AZ; sister-in-law, Veryl Sharples of Swanton, OH; and many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held 7:30 p.m. Thursday, August 15, 2002 at Bethel United Methodist Church, 1220 Bethel Rd., where the family will receive friends prior to the service from 6-7:15 p.m. Rev. Thomas Keene will officiate. A graveside service will be held in Swanton, Oh. at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to: The Africa University Endowment Fund for Scholarships, Africa University Development Office, P.O. Box 34007, Nashville, TN 37203-0007; American Brain Tumor Association, 2720 River Road, Suite 146, Des Plaines, IL 60018; or to Bethel United Methodist Church, 1220 Bethel Rd., Columbus, OH 43220.
