Joseph R. Leah, 93, of Vandergrift, a former community leader in Emlenton, died at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, in Harmar Village, Allegheny County. Born Oct. 11, 1907, in Greensburg, he was a son of Richard and Margaret Kline Leah.

Mr. Leah was employed for 40 years as a foreman in the remelt division of Alcoa in New Kensington. In his early years, he was a Presbyterian by faith and later became a member of the Emlenton United Methodist Church. Mr. Leah was a charter member of the Kiwanis Club of Emlenton and held various offices, including president. He also was a charter member and past president of the Emlenton Area Over-55 Club and had organized the club's bus trips for many years. He was awarded special recognition by the club when he was named "1993 Member of the Year."

Mr. Leah was a member of the Allegheny Valley Lodge, No. 552, F. & A.M., and the
Consistory of the Valley of New Castle. For many years, he provided transportation for the elderly and shut-ins to doctor's appointments and grocery stores. Mr. Leah enjoyed his home that he built along the Allegheny River near Emlenton. He participated annually in the Emlenton Summer Festival and his home was the starting point each year for the river raft race. He was a member of the Chieftain Archery Club. Mr. Leah was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting and flower gardening.

He was married in Wellsburg, W.Va., Dec. 24, 1928, to the former Marie V. Best, who died Nov. 26, 1985. Surviving are three sons, Joseph E. Leah of Avonmore, Kenneth G. Leah of Vandergrift and David A. Leah of Santa Ana, Calif.; a daughter, Annabelle Uckert of Pound Ridge, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Joseph, Jill and William Leah and Christopher and Nicole Prevatte; and a number of great-grandchildren. He also is survived by one brother, Robert Leah of Peoria, Ill.; four sisters, Marie Schrecengost and Edith Schlecot, both of Lower Burrell, Margaret Gancas of Meadville and Ann Ferguson of Creighton; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Leah was preceded in death by two brothers.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the Christopher M. Hile Funeral Home, Emlenton. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the funeral home with the Rev. Steve Soltis, pastor of the Emlenton United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Lori T. Danielson, pastor of the Emlenton Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment will be in Plum Creek Cemetery, Plum Borough. Memorials may be made to a Kiwanis-sponsored charity of one's choice.
