The death of Antone M. Vincent

Antone M. Vincent, an old settler of the Tuttletown section, passed away in Oakland at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Mr. Vincent went below (to the valley) on September 4th to see the Exposition in San Francisco. He was in good health, except for a slight cold, and was arranging to return home. The cold rapidly developed into bronchial pneumonia, and he was placed in a private sanitarium where skilled doctors labored hard without avail to save his life. The remains were shipped to Sonora Thursday morning and taken to the family home at Tuttletown the same evening. The funeral occurred from there at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, the cortege arriving in Sonora at 10:00 a.m. when a requiem mass was celebrated in the St. Patrick's church by Father Gilmartin. Interment was in Mountain View cemetery.

Antone M. Vincent was a man of high honor and integrity – a citizen enjoying the respect and esteem and confidence of everybody. He was a most devoted man to his family, and his death is a severe blow to his invalided wife and three sons. The sons have all grown to manhood, and like their lamented father, are highly esteemed in the communities in which they live. They are: Joseph M. Vincent, in the blacksmith business at Ceres, Stanislaus County; John Vincent, who helps in the conduct of the farm; and Fred Vincent, a prominent educator in Southern California, where he holds the principalship of the San Luis Obispo city schools. Hundreds of friends, in fact all who knew their good old father, deeply sympathize with them in the sorrow his death has caused them.

The deceased was a native of the Azores Islands, Portugal, and at the time of his death was 72 years, 2 months and 22 days of age. He came to this county in 1864, and but for a period in the early 1870s when he returned to his native country, he has been a continuous resident.
