Claremore - Thomas E. "Tommy" Copp, 71, Elm's Motel owner, died Sunday. Graveside service 2 p.m. Thursday, Woodlawn Cemetery. Rice. (Tulsa World)
----------
A graveside service for Claremore business owner, Tommy Copp will be 2 p.m., Thursday, March 31, 2011 at Woodlawn Cemetery under the direction of Rice Funeral Service. Tommy passed away Sunday, March 27, 2011. He was 71.

Born April 28, 1939, in Claremore to Cecil and Evelyn (Overly) Copp, Tommy was reared and educated in the Claremore area, graduating in 1958. His was one of the last classes to attend the old Lone Elm School before it burned. After graduation, Tommy worked for almost 20 years in his role as a partner with his dad, Cecil Copp in the family business, Copp's Restaurant, a Claremore icon. During that time, Tommy attended one year of college at OMA and served six years as a military cook in the Army National Guard.

After the death of his father in 1980, Tommy bought the Elms Motel and continued to own and manage it until the time of his death.

When Tommy wasn't fine tuning his entrepreneurial skills, he loved to drive around town in one of his many Ford Thunderbirds. He had a real knack for landscape design and loved to plant and take care of the many shrubs, flowers and trees that accented the motel. He was also known for his unusual way of joking with people but was always willing to help anybody who needed a place to stay.

A special uncle and friend to many Tommy will be missed. He is survived by his niece, Jeanette Brasel and husband, Mike, and their children, Derek, Reid and Nathan, all of Claremore; brother-in-law Dale Edwards of Tulsa, and his son Doug Edwards and wife, Marla, of Ramona. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Charlotte Edwards, and nephew Robert A. Baker.
