Robert Elmer Herring, 88, departed this life on Saturday, September 3, 2011, at The Laurels of Charlottesville.

He was born on December 12, 1922, in Greene County to the late Robert Lee and Rosa Michael Herring.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Clara Deane Herring; two daughters, Lois Nottingham and her husband, Tommy, of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Veronica Brownlee and husband, Nick, of Acton, Massachusetts; two grandchildren, Lisa Frazier and her husband, Greg, Brian Nottingham and his wife, Christa, all of Charlottesville, Virginia; two step-granddaughters, Erin Brownlee Dell and her husband, Kyle, of Greensboro, North Carolina, Anne Brownlee of Summerville, Massachusetts; three great-grandchildren who were the pride and joy of his life, Ashley and Sara Nottingham, and Bryston Frazier, all of Charlottesville; two step great-grandchildren, Sam and Phoebe Dell of Greensboro, North Carolina; two sisters, Dorothy Deane of Charlottesville, Virginia, Irene Wood and her husband, Curtis, of Free Union, Virginia; two brothers, Walter Herring of Dyke, Virginia, Claude Herring and his wife, Dorothy, of Ruckersville, Virginia; many nieces and nephews and a family friend, Christy Wills, of Barboursville, Virginia.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Meredith, George, Edward and Howard "Harold" Herring; three sisters, Beulah Hough, Christine Morris and Margaret Easton; and a great-granddaughter, Kelli D. Frazier.

His first job was working at Bethlehem Steel Company in Baltimore, Maryland. He then joined the United States Navy and served in World War II on the USS Midway. After serving in the Navy, he worked for Southern Welding in Charlottesville. Robert then began his 37 year career at The University of Virginia Buildings and Grounds. At the time of his retirement, he was the Mechanical Superintendent.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and Nascar Racing. He was a member of the Frazier Mountain Hunt Club and served many years as secretary and treasurer.

Mr. Herring was a member of Maple Grove Christian Church, where he served faithfully until his health began to decline. There he sang in the choir, and served as a deacon and trustee. He loved giving and doing things for others, never wanting anything in return (especially vegetables from his garden).

Mr. Herring was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was a person who greatly loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday, September 4, 2011, at Maple Grove Christian Church, 3210 Proffit Road, Charlottesville, Virginia.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m.Tuesday, September 6, 2011, at Maple Grove Christian Church with Roger Browning, Tracy Tucker and John Fisk officiating. Interment will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens.

The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Cynthia Richards and Dr. Andrea Tribastone for the compassionate care they provided. In addition, the family appreciates the personal care provided by the staff at The Laurels of Charlottesville.

In lieu of flowers, Mr. Herring requested that contributions be made to the Kelli D. Frazier Scholarship Fund (Northridge Preschool), 5100 Dickerson Road, Charlottesville, Virginia, 22911.
