~ My Aunt

Alice Joella Williams Kramer was born September 8th 1916, the 4th child, in a family of six children. She was the daughter of two Midwesterners. Her mother, Nellie, was a Missouri housewife & her father, Edwin, was a brakeman for the railroad. After her upbringing in the state of Missouri, she came to California around the year, 1939. Joey remembered celebrating her 23rd birthday here in Eureka.

During her life, she acquired many family titles. She was a daughter…sister…wife…aunt…mother…grandmother and great-grandmother.

We all knew her as Joella or Joey or Jo. But to me, she was my Auntie Jo. She was one of a pair in her household. There were always Uncle Goob & Auntie Jo.

When I was a child we spent a great deal of time together. We played hide & seek and sang songs. When I got a little older, I would help her with the dishes. She would wash & I would dry. During the time our family dog had a terminal illness, it was Auntie Jo's house to which my parents sent me, to protect me from those sad days. I still think of all of her hugs and Colgate toothpaste scented, kisses.

I remember when my [adopted] cousin Ann was born and the week's wait to bring her home. What joy she gave to her new parents. She was their life's greatest treasure. Joey's loving spirit is now evident in Ann…Ann's children and Ann's grandchild. And so love and kindness is passed from one generation to the next.

Through all of my years as a child, a teenager and later as a young mother, I could depend on Joey for encouragement, advice and understanding. Her lifelong kindness to me has been and will always be remembered. She was my special aunt and my mother, Eunice's, special sister. I am proud of my middle name, which is also Joey, given to me by my parents as a tribute to Joella.

Today, for those of us who are Joey's family and those of us who are just like her family, we expect that with time, the sharp intensity of our grief will lessen. We know that our love will not.

Only an Aunt...
can give hugs
like a mother,
can keep secrets
like a sister,
and share love like a friend.
