Albert Willis Southwick
Albert Willis Southwick was born April 3, 1856 near Jamestown, NY and passed away at his home in Des Moines, March 13th, aged 77 years, 11 months and 21 days.
He moved west with his parents at the age of 6 years, making the trip by covered wagon which took 11 weeks. They first settled on a farm near Rockford, Ill., latter selling and moving to Cambridge, Iowa, November 17, 1867 where he spent his childhood days.
On August 24, 1882 he was united in marriage to Margaret Irene Spar at Ada, Ohio. To this union were born 7 children, 3 boys and 4 girls, Clarence W., Edith F. Erickson, deceased, Minnie C Wilderson, Pearle f., Ilo G. Morley, Geo. L. and Forest A.
Mr Southwick was postmaster at Cambridge for 5 1/2 years, township assessor 18 years and member of the school board, township No. 1 for 21 years where all 7 of his children attended.
Mr and Mrs Southwick lived on their farm 2 1/2 miles west of Cambridge for 23 years, then moved to Cambridge where they lived until November 1927 when they moved to Des Moines.
He saw Iowa grow from pioneer mud roads, to paved roads, automobiles and aeroplanes. His wife preceded him in death August 10, 1930. He is survived by 6 children, 8 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren together with a host of friends.
All the children except Minnie and Leslie attended the funeral.
The funeral was held Friday afternoon from the White funeral home with Rev. W.S. Kight officiating, Interment in the Magnolia cemetery near Des Moines.
