James Monroe (Moe) Cunningham, 67, Sturgeon Lake, died Monday, Sept. 5, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester following a year's illness.

James Cunningham was born at Sturgeon Lake on January 19, 1917. He grew up in the Sturgeon Lake area and graduated from the Willow River High School. He attended the University of Minnesota for a short time before returning to Sturgeon Lake where he worked for his father in the Cunningham Mercantile Store. Moe, as he was known to his many friends, purchased the store from his father and operated it for many years. He was also past Post Master in Sturgeon Lake for many years. Moe served with the U.S. Army during World War II and after his discharge in 1945 he and Art Mossberg started a Flying School at the Sturgeon Lake Airport. He also taught flying in North Dakota for a short time. Mr. Cunningham became a rural mail carrier in the late 40's and retired this past year. He owned the J and M Electronics in Sturgeon Lake from 1953 to 1975 and was a Correctional Counselor at the Willow River Youth Camp from 1953 to 1963. Moe was a member of St. Isidore's Catholic Church and the Denham American Legion Post #361. On February 12 1977, he married Ruth M. Dillner at Moose Lake.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth, Sturgeon Lake; four sons, James, Stillwater, Williams, Thomas and Donovan, all of Sturgeon Lake; three daughters, Mrs. David (Caryl) Miskanis, El Paso, Illinois, Mrs. John (JoAnn) Orvedahl, Sturgeon Lake and Mrs. Bruce (Sandra) Bohaty, Willow River; one sister, Mrs. Kenneth F. (Ruby) Gay, Moose Lake; a brother, John H. Cunningham, Sturgeon Lake, and 10 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held from ST. Isidore's Catholic Church on Friday, September 9, at 10 a.m. Rev. Russell Tremblay OMI and Rev. E. L. Rieff officiated. Casket bearers were Kenneth C. Gay, James, John S. William, Thomas and Donovan Cunningham. Honorary bearers were Elliott Olesen and David Nyrud,. Interment was held at the St. Isidore's Catholic Cemetery at Sturgeon Lake.
