Obituary: Death of James M. Bratton.
The Huntington daily papers of last Saturday announce the death of that old, well-known and very highly respected citizen, James M. Bratton, at his home in Huntington early last Saturday morning. He was a resident of the city fifty-seven years, and died just after the close of his eighty-seventh birthday. Mr. Bratton was a native of Pennsylvania. He left home at the age of fourteen and learned the carpenter's trade at Pittsburgh, came to Ohio, and in 1832 located at Marion. Returned to Ohio for a couple of years, and in 1835 located at Peru, Ind., and the same year was married to Hannah A. Wall, of Grant county. Moved to Lagro in 1837, and in 1839 came to Huntington, where he resided the rest of his life. He was married three times, his last wife surviving him. He was the father of twelve children, nine of whom are living. Mr. Bratton was a charter member of Amity Lodge No. 483 F. & A.M. and had advanced in Masonry until he became a Knight Templar, was a charter member of Huntington Commandery No. 35. Politically he was a Republican, and was honored with public office, having been coroner two years, justice of the peace seven years and county sheriff. To the last named office he was elected in the fall of 1886, at the age of seventy-seven years, and discharged the duties with perfect acceptability to the people, and was re-elected at the close of his first term. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon. (The Warren Republican, Thursday, October 8, 1896)
