Lydia Ann Babson was born 12 July 1845 in Illinois, the daughter of Theodore Babson (1803-1890) and Betsey Tarbox Emery (1804-1874). On 30 June 1869 Lydia married Joseph Cook Hopkins and the couple would have at least five children--Eliza, James, Charles, Jennie, and Elizabeth. Joseph Hopkins was born in Pennsylvania circa May 1841, the son of James J. Hopkins and Jane Cook. In 1860 Joseph was living with his parents on a farm in Clarion, Bureau, Illinois. Joseph enlisted on 1 June 1864 in the Illinois 139th Infantry Regiment and was mustered out on 28 October 1864. In 1870 Lydia and Joseph were living with her parents on a farm in Clarion, Bureau, Illinois; by 1880 the couple and four children were farming on their own in Clarion. By 1900 Lydia, Joseph, and two daughters had relocated to Mendota, Illinois and were still farming. I could not find a death date for Joseph, but Lydia applied for this Civil War Pension on 2 September 1904. In 1910 Lydia was living with her son Charles and his wife in Jackson, Kansas; in 1920 she was living with her daughter Elizabeth and her husband in Los Angeles. Lydia passed away on 20 April 1923.
