Bathshua Holmes was described in Larned’s History of Windham County, Connecticut as the heroine of the Woodstock Colony because of her many daring deed during the Indian assaults on that frontier. She was known for her work as doctress and a midwife. In the great snowstorm of 1717, she left her house by climbing out of a second story window and traveling by snowshoe holding on to a long pole that two men who accompanied her held between them. She walked to Dudley, MA to attend a sick woman.
She was a recognized authority in all things housewifery.
Bathshua was the daughter of Thomas and Christian Sanford. She married David Holmes October 26,1720 in Dudley,Worcester, MA and Joseph Edmonds July 12, 1746 in Dudley,Worcester, MA.
