He enlisted 1 March 1862, age 40, at Tulip, Arkansas in Company C, 2nd Arkansas Cavalry, C.S.A. also known as the 4th Regiment of Arkansas Cavalry after consolidation at Corinth, MS. He enlisted for one year and was discharged 30 April 1863, as his enlistment was up and he was exempted from the conscript act due to his age. His discharge certificate stated he was age 41, born in Marion District, South Carolina; 5 feet 9 inches high, dark complexion, blue eyes, and occupation was a farmer.
