Clement N. Abernethy was born in Gaston County, North Carolina on October 14, 1834. He married Jane S. Hinkle on August 25, 1858. On March 12, 1862, at age 27, he enlisted for Civil War service in Company C, 1st Artillery, 10th Regiment, NC State Troops (The Charlotte Artillery). He served in that unit until the end of the war and was paroled at Appomattox Courthouse, Va., on April 9, 1865. He returned home and lived in Mecklenburg County until his death on March 31, 1906 at the age of 71.
