Jerry Tony Payne was born July 7, 1943, in Asheville, Buncombe, North Carolina, a son of the late Loy and Rosa Lee West Payne of Brasstown, NC. His maternal grandparents were the late Julius and Annie Ammons West of Marysville, Washington. His paternal grandmother was the late Linda Payne of Brasstown.

He was a US Army veteran, serving in Korea and in Vietnam. After his military service, he earned an accounting degree from Western Carolina University and became a certified public accountant. Jerry was married three times, first to my sister, Wanda Carringer of Brasstown, divorced, no children; second to Margaret Varner of Bryson City, divorced, two children, Mark and Peyton Nicole. His third marriage was to Patricia of Arkansas, who predeceased him. He had a stepson from his third marriage.

Other than his parents, his maternal grandparents, his paternal grandmother, and his third wife, Jerry was preceded in death by an infant sister, Beverly Gail Payne, who is buried at Hickory Stand Methodist Church cemetery in Brasstown, NC.

Survivors include his two children from his second marriage, and one step-son; two brothers, Kirk Payne of Brasstown, Steve Payne of Hiawassee, GA, a half-brother, Max Payne of Brasstown, a half-sister, Ruth Payne Garner of Maryland, nephews, nieces, and old friends who remember his many kindnesses.

My parents were especially fond of Jerry and always thought of him as a permanent member of the family. He loved my daughter Kim and he drove us home from the hospital after her birth in his big Buick, insisting it was the safest and smoothest ride ever. He would often bring her gifts, several of which she still has, including a collection of tiny Disney characters that her beloved Uncle Jerry gave to her when she was just a few months old. She did not get to play with them until she was much older, but she particularly loved them.

Jerry passed away following a brave battle with cancer at his home in Mt. Judea, Arkansas on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2005. He had told a few old friends that he believed his disease was related to his exposure to Agent Orange while serving in Vietnam.
