Dr. Murphy was my 7th Grade English Teacher at Toll Jr. High in Glendale CA. He was not only an amazingly young teacher back then but he taught in a way that was engaging and fun. All the kids loved him. We became good friends and at times would drive me home from school in his pale yellow VW Bug. He knew who the "latch key kids" were and he never wanted any kids getting into trouble after school so he would invite us kids to hang out after school in class and tell us hilarious stories of his upbringing. We connected with the "Italian guilt" and he would always nod my way when he told of his very Italian, Catholic Mother coming to his apartment and sprinkling holy water everywhere because of his posters all over of movies like The Exorcist and other Horror movies. He even got the school to agree to let him show "Night of the Living Dead" in the school auditorium for any student who wanted to see it.

He took my friends and I to our first Science Fiction Convention and he took us to see Star Wars. He had posters of Science Fiction movies up in his class room as well as posters of current Rock bands and artists. One day he asked me to come by his class room after school. I came to his class and he had taken down the poster of Peter Frampton and had it rolled up and ready for me. He said, "Since I catch you looking at the poster every time you're in class, I think you should take it home and put it up in your room. That way you won't be so distracted in class." And with that we both laughed. He was a remarkable teacher and I secretly had a crush on him for years.

He continued teaching at several schools and coaching basketball for several years until he returned to school himself, attained his Doctorate and became Dr. Murphy. At the time of death, he was the school principle for Gabrielino High School in San Gabriel, CA.
The students loved him.

And here is a lovely tribute put together by the kids at his school:

I've read so many comments from students and people who had their own experience with Dr. Murphy (or Murph as I knew him.) He was a treasure and sad to think he died at such a young age. God Speed Murph..you'll always be missed.

Cause of death: Colon Cancer
