Salmon Portland Chase ("Porter" on the tombstone is incorrect) was named after his father's much-admired distant cousin, Free Soil party founder, U.S. Treasury Secretary under Lincoln and Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court Salmon Portland Chase.

Born in Ohio, Portland or Port as he was known as a child, moved with his family as Free Soilers to "Bleeding Kansas" in 1857 or 1858 settling in Woodson County. In 1861 his father Emeric joined the Kansas 9th Regiment Cavalry and later the Union Army. Both his father and mother died in 1864 leaving him an orphan at age 9. Along with younger brothers Arthur and Lincoln, Portland was raised in Meigs County Ohio in the large family of their Guardian and uncle George Chase. Portland later returned to Woodson Co. KS, joining older brother Oscar Chase, where he married Mary P. Gillett, the sister of Oscar's wife Jane Abelia Gillett, in Dec. 1884. (The findagrave memorial to Mary misspells her maiden name, it's Gillett, not Billette).

Portland also had an older sister Lucetta Chase who became a schoolteacher in KS at age 18. Little is known about her life after that date (1870).

Portland and Mary had eight children, Jesse P., Ila D., Cora B., Grace E., Salmon P., Alva P., Mary M. and Emeric, according to the 1900 US census. First wife Mary Gillett died after the 1898 birth of Emeric and before the June 28, 1900 census date. On December 22, 1906 in Meade Co. KS, Port married widow Elizabeth M. "Lizzie" Peterson Edwards. They resided in Meade County KS where Lizzie added four children to the Chase family, Lester, Delbert, Fritz and Pearl, in addition to her five children with first husband Joseph H. Edwards: Joseph H., Minnie, Cora Dorothy, Lillie and Daisy Edwards. Lizzie's daughter Cora Dorothy Edwards would later marry her stepbrother, Salmon/Sam L. Chase.

Following Portland's death, Lizzie is found in the 1930 Census back in Meade Co. KS living with son Fritz, widowed daughter Daisy Foote and her child Margaret, and grandson Floyd Chase (son of Sam and Cora).

Elizabeth M. "Lizzie" Peterson Edwards Chase's life after 1930, her date of death and the location of her grave are not known. Additional information would be welcome.
