Spencer H. Wicks.
Spencer H. Wicks, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. R. Wicks, was born in New York, May 22, 1852. He moved with his parents to Ohio, and from there at the age of 18 came with them to Girard and settled on a farm, two miles southeast of the city. December 19, 1878, he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah F. Ward of Girard. The bonds of this union have been strong and a happy home was built. Into this home came three sons and four daughters-one son and one daughter preceding him. On March 4, 1913 he moved from the farm to his late residence at 601 E. Forest Ave in this city. Mr. Wicks was active in the affairs of the city and community. He was of a kindly disposition, making friends wherever he went. His membership in the Christian church of this city covered a number of years and his work was well done. He sang in the choir, served on the official board, and was active in The Brotherhood class. He loved to be with his fellows and was a man among them. He held membership in the Carpenters and International Laborers Union. He had been in failing health for many months and knew himself that his homecoming was drawing near. Rest came to him at 6:30 on the morning of February 6th and his spirit winged its flight to the Great Beyond.
He leaves his companion; two sons Lee A. of Larned, Kansas and Clark J. of Clovis N. Mex; three daughters, Mrs Cora Wilkerson, Oswego, Kansas, Mrs. Luna LaRue, of Girard, and Miss Josie at home; 5 grandsons, and two granddaughters, besides a large circle of friends and neighbors who mourn his departure. Funeral services were held from the Christian Church in Girard, Thursday afternoon at 2:30 conducted by W. E. Babb, his pastor for almost nine years. Interment was made in the Girard Cemetery.
