James Leon Atkins, owner of Tri-State Maintenance Service, drowned Saturday off San Juan Island, Washington. Mr. Atkins, who lived at 14496 Fairoaks Lane, Oak Grove was 48. Born in Tacoma, Mr Atkins moved to the Portland area as a child. He was a graduate of Benson High School. He was a professional scuba diver and active in sports and commercial and business activities.
Survivors include his wife Rosemary; sons, Daniel of Westminster, Calif., and Michael of Los Angeles; daughter, Julie E. Ryden, Sioux City Iowa; mother, Rosalie Smith, Portland; brother Jack Atkins, Portland; sister Joyce Nelson, Hawaii; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
