Roderick "Roger" McKinzie was born about 1761 in either South Carolina or Scotland -- histories differ on this point. His wife may have been a Kilgore -- this point is also debated among Roderick scholars. He does appear on the 1790 Cheraws District of South Carolina with a wife and son (John). By 1800 he has moved his family of 2 daughters and 2 sons (John and Charles) to the Chesterfield District of SC. In 1820, Roger and family are in the Darlington District of SC where most of the family lore record his children as being born.

With his eye on ever-greener pastures, Roderick and sons John, Charles, and Cornelius are recorded as having land surveyed or as being chain bearers in the Sevier Co, TN Surveyor's Book beginning in the mid-1820's.

Roderick and his three sons all appear with their families on the 1830 Sevier Co, TN census. Roderick's age falls into the 60-69 age group. This is the last record found to date for Roderick.

It can very logically be assumed that he died in Sevier Co, TN and was buried in the graveyard of the church his family attended, the Fork of the Little Pigeon River Baptist Church. The graveyard has not survived to the present day.

If Roderick can be judged by the character of his sons and what few existing records tell us, he was a stalwart man, a man of strong mettle, enduring, and loyal to his family with an adventurous spirit that looked just over the mountains ahead for something better for his family.

Who could ask for a better legacy?
