Sylvia Jane Tousley was born Feb. 15, 1874, the daughter of Frank and Emma Tousley, near Wood Center in Clayton county, where she spent most of her girlhood days.
She died Dec. 9 at the University of Iowa hospital after a short illness at the age of 73 years, nine months and 24 days.
She was married July 1, 1890 to Morphy Chase and they had four children, Louis of Aurora, Ben of Fayette, Cora Abel of Oelwein and Alma who preceded her in death. Her husband preceded her in death on June 9, 1926.
She spent most of her married life on a farm three and a half miles southeast of Maynard. She moved from the farm to Maynard where she married Bernard Bartels July 26, 1928. He died four years later.
She was a member of the Presbyterian church of Oelwein.
Besides her children she is survived by eight grandchildren; four brothers, Frank Tousley of Avoca, Wis.; Will Tousley of Waterloo; Hoddy Tousley of Hayward, Calif., Irvin Tousley of Newport, Ore. Four sisters, Minnie Delora of Pacific Grove, Calif., Lydia Hayes of Newport, Ore., Myrtle Newhouse and Pearl Wilson of Minneapolis, Minn. One brother and one sister preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church at Maynard Friday afternoon conducted by the Rev. S. R. Reed and burial was in Long Grove cemetery in Maynard.
