Hannah Hoag was the daughter of Robert Nesbit Hoag (1795-1877) and Abigail Gifford (1800-1836), married in 1819. They had seven children, Allen Gifford, Elizabeth, Alvincy, Sarah Corinne, Abigail, and Jonathan Elihu Hoag.

Hannah married Ebenezer Balch in 1856 in Pittstown, NY. They lived in Washington County, NY, where Balch was from and had three children. The eldest became the wealthy electrical pioneer Allan C. Balch (1864-1943) of Los Angeles, California. The other children were Libbie Balch and Howard J. Balch. Only Howard had a child; son Howard David Balch, born 1901.
