Eva Elizabeth Backus Mattingly was born to James Mitchell Backus and Sara Della Cushatt Backus in Ames, Gage Co. Nebraska. She was one of 6 children born to James and Sara. She grew to maturity and married Leonidas Harry Mattingly on June 2, 1915 at the age of 19 in Lincoln County, Kutch, Colorado. She gave birth to 11 children, all surviving except a baby girl born in 1934. Living children were Frances Adell, Murriel Estell, George Franklin, James William, Mary Elizabeth, Harry Mitchell, Wanda Mae, Rosa Lee, Irene Phyllis, and Leonard Henry. Eva died at the age of 52 from Tuberculosis. She is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, El Centro, California.
