Indian Wars Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the United States Army during the Wars with the Plains Indians as a First Sergeant in Company F, 3rd United States Cavalry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at the Battle of Rosebud River, Montana on June 17, 1876. His citation reads simply “Gallantry in action”. His Medal was awarded to him on August 9, 1880. The fight that he participated in was part of the failed 1876 campaign against the Sioux and Cheyenne Indians that culminated in the Battle of Little Big Horn, and had been a tactical defeat for the Army, since they were stopped in their drive north to link with the forces of G.A. Custer by the Indians. Today the battle site is now Rosebud Battlefield State Park. The 3rd US Cavalry’s First Sergeant Joseph Robinson, First Sergeant John H. Shingle and Trumpeter Elmer A. Snow also were awarded the Medal of Honor for this action.
