Vera was the eldest of 13 children. Although she never had a child of her own, she helped to raise her brothers and sisters and a few neices and nephews. In her younger days, she moved to Mississippi and worked on large ships as a welder. She married Carl Humphries around 1940 (she was 18) and he died on 25 Apr 1947. Later she married Calvin Smith who was a deep water back hoe operator. They were both members of the Free Mason's. Vera loved to garden and can fruit and vegetables. She was a great pastry chef and was always cooking up something. May she Rest in Peace.
