Fred Elmer Coward was born 23 May 1903 in Jackson county, North Carolina, the son of Jonathan Hillman Coward (1858-1924) and Julie Lovedahl Coward (1861-1926). He was married to Moody Nicholson Parker (1902-1941) on 20 January 1921 in Jackson county, NC. He worked as a state highway surveyor, and later as a night watchman. They had ten children. He was widowed in 1941. He was later married to the widow Iva Lee Sisk Shelton (1911-1999). He died 7 March 1971 in Waynesville, NC at the age of 67.
