WORLD WAR II

Ceramicist-the 5th child of 12 children born to Finnish immigrants. During WWll he spent 5 yrs. as an Army Air Forces fighter pilot crew chief and B-17 gunner. He was shot down twice over Germany. After the war he attended the League if NH Arts and Crafts where he met his wife, Vivika Timeriasieff. In 1952 they moved to CA where Otto worked for NASA and Vivika worked at USC. In the 60s they lived on the east coast and then returned to CA. Beatrice Wood was a former pupil of theirs. They had no children.Otto perfected a butter yellow glaze inspired by an ancient Chinese version that had been lost for centuries but was popular in the Chin dynasty AD 265-420. He did not pass the formula on. He earned the gold medal at the 6th Biennial International de Ceramique in France and a Diplome D'Honeur from the International Academy of Ceramics in Cannes in 1955. He and Vivika exhibited at the Picasso Museum in France, the Smithsonian, the LA County Museum of Art and the American Craft Museum in NY. He produced thousands of pieces per year. He was a philanthropist, teacher, and mentor to generations of potters. He and Vivika taught at the Chouinard Art Institute. He died of acute renal failure.
