Wayne was born in Dartmounth, MA and was the only child of John and Doris Sylvia. Wayne attended Dartmouth High School and graduated with the Class of 1965. His favorite hangout was the Midway Bowling Center, where he liked to play the pin ball machine and shoot pool with his friends.
Wayne enlisted in the Marines 12 September 1966. His father died 14 September 1966.
His father served in the US Army, as a Military Police Escort, Guard Company, during WWII.
When Wayne arrived in Vietnam, he was sent to 2nd Platoon of Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division.
Wayne and 3 Marines were at a Listening Post, when they were ambushed by NVA forces with automatic weapons fire and rocket propelled grenades. Wayne died as a result of several fragmentation wounds to the body, about 9 kilometers east southeast of Bai Lang, near Ap Vinh, during Operation Bear Chain.
Wayne was single and served his country for 10 months and 9 days and was KIA #14722.
He was 20 years, 6 months and 14 days old.
Survived by his mother; Mrs Doris M Sylvia of 324 Hixville Rd, N Dartmouth, MASS.
Wayne was buried next to his father, John Pestano Sylvia.
