From History of the upper Mississippi Valley
By Newton Horace Winchell, Edward Duffield Neill, John Fletcher Williams, published 1881

J. H. DENNIS, one of the first settlers of Sauk Centre, was born in Somerset county Maine, on the 18th of August, 1828. He was raised on a farm until twenty-one years of age, his father being a farmer and local minister. In 1850, he went to Worcester, Massachusetts, where he was Assistant Supervisor of the State Lunatic Asylum one year, and also spent two years in the machinist's trade. The next three or four years were spent in Allegany county, New York, in Pennsylvania, and Hudson, Wisconsin, in the lumber business. In 1856 he removed to Hastings, Minnesota, where he was engaged in farming until coming to Sauk Centre in September, 1858. He soon after took a claim in what is now the town of Melrose, where he resided until 1864, since which time, Sauk Centre has been his home. In 1875, Oakland Cemetery, the property of Mr. Dennis, located in the suburbs of the village was laid out and dedicated. In June, 1859, he was made Constable and has been re-elected to the office each succeeding year; he was also Deputy Sheriff for ten years. Mr. Dennis was married in 1856, to Amanda S. Chapman, of Syracuse, New York. Of eight children which they have had, but three are living: Faustina B., Hiram E., and Leona E.

OBITUARIES

JOHN H. DENNIS

Last week the HERALD briefly announced the death of John H. Dennis, and at that time had very few facts a hand relative to his life. It has since been learned that John Halden Dennis was born in Eat New Portland, Maine, on August 18, 1825, and was therefore in his seventy-fifth year, and he was a remarkably well-preserved old gentleman both physically and mentally until the disease which proved fatal attacked his vigorous contstitution. He removed to Wisconsin in 1853, and in June 17, 1858, married Amanda S. Chapman at Prescott, Wis. The following year he removed to hastings, Minn., and thence in 1858 to Melrose, where he resided until 1864, when he came to this city. For thrity-two years he was identified with its interests, always taking an active part in public affairs. For twenty-two years he was deputy sheriff of Stearns county.

During his later years he was engaged in the insurance business. He was a man of infinite jest, and enjoyed a pleasnaty practical joke whether he or some other was the victim of it. Our older residents, when in reminiscent mood, have a store of them to tell in which he was active. In 1896 he removed to Minneapolis, where he died February 23, 1900. Eight children were born to them, three of whom survive: Mrs. S. M. Barton of San Pedro, Cal., Hiram I Dennis of the state of Washington, and Mrs. C. M. Clark of Minneapolis. His wife, who survives him, makes her home with her younger daughter, Mrs. Clark.
