Mr. Collins was a member of the Carrollton First Christian Church and the Carrollton Optimist Club where over his 35 years of membership he served as president and chairman of District Officers on more than one occasion. He was a veteran of the US Air Force where he served his Country for over five years and retired from Printed Fabrics in 1996 where he was the warehouse manager. He served on the Carrollton City Council for 12 years, was a member and chairman of the Chatt Flint APDC, and was appointed under Gov. Joe Frank Harris and Gov. Zell Miller as chairman of the governor's advisory board on Planning & Zoning.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Thurman Collins; sisters, Shirley Henderson, Lois Deese and Joan Langley, as well as a son-in-law, Danny Smith.
Survivors include his wife, Lorraine Collins; children and their spouses, Michael and Anita Collins, Bill and Kelly Collins, Tony and Lorri Collins, Pam Smith, Cindy and Joe Williamson, Neva and Keith Higgs, Beth and Tony Bailey and Debbie and Kenny Rollins; also surviving are 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, June 12, 2009, at 11 a.m. from Martin & Hightower Heritage Chapel with Min. John Morris officiating with a eulogy by Mr. Dick Ingle. Pallbearers will be Roger Gray, Johnny Earl, Rodney Earl, Joe Arnoldy, Ben Marshall, Ben Rollins, Garrett Bell and Mark Bell. Members of the Carrollton Optimist Club will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Interment will follow in Carrollton City Cemetery with the Flag presentation by American Legion Post #143.
