Cornelia Vera Hay Dent, age 82, passed away peacefully on September 24 at Kaiser Hospital in Santa Clara.

She was born in Memphis, TN, and moved to Santa Clara County in 1964, where she lived until her death. Mrs. Dent grew up in Nashville, TN, where she graduated from Peabody College.

Her father was George D. Hay, a Memphis newspaperman known as the Solemn Ol' Judge, who in 1925 created the Grand Ole Opry, the live weekly Saturday night radio show originating in Nashville featuring country music. Mr. Hay ran the Opry until around 1950 on WSM radio, where it is still heard today.

Mrs. Dent was an avid lifelong reader, especially interested in Oriental poetry, travel literature, mysteries and the works of Henry James, housing a collection of 4000 books. In her later years she developed an active interest in Chinese brush painting.

Mrs. Dent was married for 50 years to Woodrow Wilburn Dent from Adrian, GA, who passed away in 1991.

She was the mother of Jamie Frette of Los Altos, Susan Olson of San Jose, Peter Dent of Santa Clara, and the late sons Michael Dent and David Dent; grandmother of Matthew Olson of San Jose, Jennifer Anderson of Clarksville, AR and Juliette Frette of Los Altos; great-grandmother of Deegan Gregory Anderson of Clarksville, AR; sister of Margaret Van Damm of Albuquerque, NM and mother-in-law to Gregory Olson of San Jose.
