James was the third of 4 children born to Florentine and Margaret (Vierling) Sand. He married. No children. They divorced.

Sand James J. "Sandman", age 51 of Shakopee. Survived by parents, Florentine & Margaret; brothers, John (Jean) all of Shakopee, Richard (Theresa) of Golden Valley, Nancy (Larry) Pokorny of Minnetonka; nieces, Jessie Sand, Sara and Robyn Pokorny; nephews, Eli and Robert Sand; aunts, Dorothy Zetah of Tempe, Arizona and Alvina Stark of Shakopee; many relatives and friends. Memorial Mass Wednesday 11:30 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Shakopee. Interment Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4-8 PM Tuesday at the Cavanaugh-McNearney Funeral Home, 1220 East 3rd Avenue, Shakopee and at the church 1 hour prior to the Mass.
