Karl Frederick was a 1903 graduate of Princeton University and a 1908 graduate of Harvard Law School. He practiced law in New York City for many years and was involved in environmental causes, serving as chairman and president of the New York State Conservation Council and was active with the American Forestry Association. A competitive sport shooter, he competed in the 1920 Summer Olympics, winning the gold medal in the individual free pistol event. He was vice-president of the U.S. Revolver Association and was president of the National Rifle Association from 1934 to 1936.
