Alan Ernest Vessey was born 11 March 1847 in Stow, Wiggenhall, Downham, County of Norfolk, England. He arrived in New York City with his parents on 12 March 1853 on the Queen of the West from Liverpool, England. He married Jane Ann Cooper 16 July 1869 at Ashley, MN, in the home of his bride's parents, Josiah and Harriet Cooper. [I need to note here that these families were living out on the frontier at the time. Marriages took place when there was a minister or Justice of the Peace available.] Jane Ann Cooper was born 25 July 1849, at Harriman (Turners), Orange Co., NY. to Harriet Frederick (born 9 Mar 1831, Orange Co., NY and died 3 July 1929, Sauk Centre, MN.) and Josiah Cooper (born 31 Aug 1828, Paultz, NY died 3 Nov 1905, Sauk Centre, MN.) Harriet Frederick and Josiah Cooper were married Aug 1848, Chester Township, Orange Co., NY. Jane lived in New York and Pennsylvania, coming to Shakopee, MN with her parents in 1855. On May 24, 1856, the Sioux and Chippewa Indians met in fierce battle just a mile or so from her home. In 1862 when the New Ulm massacre took place, her father left to fight the Indians. Immediately after that incident her parents moved to Ashley, MN and settled on a homestead. Another source, Arlene Gable of the Cooper line, says that they did not move to Sauk Centre until Josiah Cooper returned from service in the Civil War.

In the 1870 census Alan's occupation is given as "dealer in horses". There is a note from Hattie Gilman, daughter of Jane's sister Catherine Cooper Gilman, which reads, "Alan and Jane moved from farm on Ashley Creek to City of Sauk Centre in the fall of 1873. Bought in the livery business with Parker on Third Street. Known thereafter as Parker and Vessey Livery. In 1874 Parker sold his interest to Andrew Clemens. Firm then known as Vessey and Clemens. Later Clemens died and Alan purchased Mrs. Clemens' interest and continued the business for a few years." Alan was an advertiser in the Sauk Centre Herald from March 1883 to March 1886, first as a livestock dealer and then as a seller of wood. He also advertised to sell a 160-acre farm, apparently having four teams at work breaking ground on his several farms. (His first farm was reportedly in the Jardine District of Stearns County.) On 15 March 1883 he was chosen as pound master. According to the paper, he was Street Commissioner of Sauk Centre in June, 1885 and "was doing good work on First Street between Main and Fifth Street. He is cutting off the top of the knoll and hauling the dirt into the low place by the rink."

Alan and Jane were divorced 27 Nov 1916. Alan died 22 January 1918 at Sauk Centre, MN and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Sauk Centre, MN. Jane died 6 Jan 1942, Larimore, ND, at the home of her son Ai Vessey with whom she had resided for two years. She is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Sauk Centre, Stearns Co., MN. At the time of her death she was survived by two sisters, Mrs. Kathryn Gilman and Mrs. Frank Parker, and one brother, J Fred Cooper, all of Sauk Centre in 1942. Alan E. and Jane Ann (Cooper) Vessey were the parents of five children.
