Harold was the eleventh of 12 children born to George J and Mary (Krueser) Schmitt.

He married Adella Mechtel on November 9, 1957 at St Mary's Catholic Church in Shakopee (Scott), MN. They had 9 children: Karen Ann, Patricia, Theresa, Kenneth, infant son, Laurie Ann, Edward, Steven, and Richard.
