Daughter of Andrew Van Orden and Mary Brown, wife of John Richard Edwards, a bayman, and mother of Mary Frances, Sarah Jane, Sarah Jane, and Arthur L. Edwards.

In 1850, Emily Van Orden, aged 10, was living in Brooklyn, New York with her parents, Andrew Van Orden, aged 53, and Mary Van Orden, aged 53, with siblings, Leander Van Orden, aged 14, William Van Orden, aged 18, a clerk, Mary Van Orden, aged 13, Amanda Van Orden, aged 12, with Rose Gaitland, aged 21, Fred Bastinake, aged 21, a painter, Robert Miller, aged 35, an agent, and Moses Buhart, aged 18, a tailor. Her father was shown to be a hotel keeper.

In 1855, Emily Vanorden, aged 14, was living in Brooklyn, New York, in the home of her parents, Andrew Vanorden, aged 57, and Mary Vanorden, aged 57, with siblings, Frances Vanorden, aged 19, Amanda Vanorden, aged 17, with Elizabeth Dickinson, aged 60, and Ann Fagan, aged 26. Her fathers occupation was illegible.

In 1860, Emily J. Van Orden, aged 19, was living in Brooklyn, New York, in the home of her parents, Andrew Van Orden, aged 63, the proprietor of a hotel, and Mary Van Orden, aged 63, with sister, Francis A. Van Orden, aged 22, a seamstress, with Betsy Dickinson, aged 80, and George A. Huskins, aged 29, a clerk.

On September 9, 1864, Mary Francis Edwards and Sarah Jane Edwards, daughters of John Richard and Emily Josephine Edwards, were baptized in St. John's Episcopal Church in Oakdale, New York.

In 1865, Emily J. Edwards, aged 24, born in Kings Co., was living in Islip, New York, with her husband, John R. Edwards, aged 28, born in Suffolk Co., and daughter, Mary F. Edwards, aged 3, born in Suffolk Co.

In 1870, Emily Edwards, aged 25, was living in Islip, New York, post office Sayville, with her husband, John R. Edwards, aged 33, and children, Mary Edwards, aged 8, and Sarah Edwards, aged 3. Her husband was shown to be a farmer and a worker for the railroad.

In 1880, Emily J. Edwards, aged 38, was living in Bayport, Suffolk, New York, with her husband, John R. Edwards, aged 43, and daughter, Sarah Edwards, aged 13, all born in New York.

Obituary - Mrs. John Edwards, one of our most estimable lady residents, died on the 14th of paralytic stroke. She had been sick about one week. The funeral occurred Tuesday from the Methodist Church, Rev. Mr. Beatty officiating. The remarks of the pastor were very impressive. The remains were interred in Union Cemetery where her four children have preceded her. Mr. Edwards has the deepest sympathy of the community in his sad bereavement as he is left all alone.
