Gene Riggins Sr., 87, Centralia, died Saturday, April 3, 2004, at Life Care Center, Seneca. He was born March 10, 1917, in Scandia, the son of Roy and Mamie Eastman Riggins. He grew up in Jamestown, Kan., and graduated from high school there in 1935. He attended the University of Wichita where he played halfback on the varsity football team. He enlisted in the Marine Corps during World War II. He served in the communications division as a telegrapher on the USS Appalachian AGCI in the South Pacific until 1946 when he was discharged. On June 10, 1946, he married Mildred A. "Millie" Broz at Pine City, Minn. They moved to Centralia where Gene was employed as a telegrapher by the Missouri Pacific Railroad at the. He retired in the early 1980s. He had a farm where he kept cattle and did gardening. His wife, Millie, died Feb. 27, 2000. He was a member of the Congregational Church and the Armstrong-Moyer Post 216 of the American Legion at Centralia and the Masonic Lodge 39 A.F.& A.M. for over 60 years at Seneca. He and his wife traveled and attended his ship reunions in San Diego.
