Frederick (or Frederic) was born in Michigan where his father Henry, who emigrated from Germany in 1832, was a farmer and carpenter. Fred's mother, Catherine Gestenmeyer, died at the age of 43 in 1843 (when Fred was only 4), and he remained with his father until removing to Wright County, Iowa to join his siblings (who had preceded him) in 1857. There, he lived with his brother, Henry, Jr., for a time and later with another brother, David, until Fred enlisted in the Union Army (Co. C, 3rd Iowa Infantry) about 1864. At the time of his enlistment, he had grown his own sizable livestock herd which his brothers kept intact for him while he was gone. He served with General Sherman and was discharged in Washington, D.C. in 1865. His wife Alice was a teacher at the Luick School which was located near the present cemetery. After Fred and Alice married, they commenced to amass a farming operation which grew to 3,000 acres in size. He was President of Belmond Savings Bank and a Director of the State Bank of Belmond for 20 years. One of his sons and an heir, Chester, later became a big benefactor of the community of Belmond by donating funds for the Luick Memorial Swimming Pool and the Luick Memorial Auditorium which is attached to the local high school. Chester also financially backed other civic improvements in Belmond. Fred and Alice are buried in the Belmond City Cemetery (formerly Franklin Grove Cemetery) located on Luick's Lane in the southeast part of town. His gravestone reads: "Fred Luick 1839-1919 Co C 3rd Iowa Inf."
