Peter's education began in Italy and continued locally when he immigrated to the Niagara Falls area with his family in 1927, and graduated from the former Trott Vocational High School with honors. On November 27, 1937 he married Belisena M. (LaFalce) Scrufari in Buffalo, NY. A carpenter by trade, Peter was a member of the Carpenters Union Local #289 for over sixty years. He began working at various area lumber companies which included Wicker Lumber, Whitmer and later Forgione Lumber Companies. Peter went on to co-own DST Construction Company in Niagara Falls until forming Peter Scrufari Company in Niagara Falls, which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1979. Mr. Scrufari was a longtime member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Niagara Falls, NY. In his leisure time he enjoyed gardening, but most of all, will be remembered for his dedication to his work and devotion to his family.
In addition to his wife of seventy two years, Mr. Scrufari is survived by four children, Mercuria (Dominic) Centofanti of Gouverneur, NY; Santo Salvatore (Charlene) Scrufari of Lockport, NY; Alice (Louis) Destino of Lewiston, NY and Anita (Robert) DeFrancesca of Kingston Springs, TN; eleven grandchildren, David Centofanti, Betty (John) Hall, Dominic Ronald (Melissa) Centofanti, Russell (Sue) Scrufari, Christopher (Sandy) Scrufari, Deborah (Charles) Heinrich, Brenda Scrufari, Paul (Natalie) Destino, AnnMarie Destino, Zachary DeFrancesca and Catherine DeFrancesca, twenty two great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was also predeceased by three sisters, Annunziata Rodá, Laura Corsaro-Penque and Patricia Filocamo.
