SOUTH BEND - Helen Sophia McEndarfer, 91, of South Bend, formerly of North Liberty, passed away at 5 a.m. Saturday, April 9th, in her daughter's residence after an extended illness. Mrs. McEndarfer was born on September 8, 1919, in North Liberty, IN, to the late Edward G. and Ethel E. (Fries) Smith. On February 25, 1940, in North Liberty, she married Louis E. McEndarfer, who preceded her in death on June 1, 1985. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth E. Finch and Iva (Amor) Kring; and a brother, Ralph R. Smith. Survivors include three daughters, Judith A. Springman of North Liberty, Sharon K. McEndarfer, her caretaker of South Bend, and Nancy L. McEndarfer of Fort Wayne; a granddaughter, Susan L. Springman (partner) Dean Peacock of Mishawaka; and a grandson, Eric B. Springman (Lisa M.); a great-grandchild, Cameron P. Springman; and a great-step-grandchild, Shawn D. Masten, all of North Liberty, IN. Helen was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who touched the lives of many over the years. She was a great homemaker, especially enjoying cooking, baking, reading, sewing and gardening. She was a charter member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Liberty. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 12th, in the Hanley & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home, located at West Ireland Road/State Road 23, South Bend, and one hour prior to services in the church on April 13th. Funeral services will be at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 13th, with Pastor Vicky Blough officiating. Burial will follow at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 24955 Riley Road, North Liberty, IN 46554; to Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637; or to the charity of donor's choice. The HANLEY & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home handled arrangements and extends its deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers to the McEndarfer family.
