Painter. Although he attended the royal school of architecture, he decided to study painting. He joined the military and while stationed at Paris, he used the time to study techniques. At first he concentrated on portraits and some incidental work for almanacs. He also spent five years in Italy study painting. At his return to Berlin, his successful first exhibition, led to Friedrich William III appointing him the royal court painter. He was also now a professor and member of the Academic Senate. His best known works are "Christ in the Desert," "Italian Peasants by an Ancient Fountain," He produced over 1,000 drawings.
