A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005, at 2 p.m. at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre for Gladys Denzer, age 94 of Sauk Centre, who went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, Aug. 12, 2005. Inurnment will follow in Oakland Cemetery. Gladys was born in rural Perkins County, South Dakota, on Feb. 23, 1911 to George Edward and Anna Mary (Heistad) Gunion, the fifth child of this union. At the age of nine months, her father was killed in a train wreck while moving back to Minnesota. Her mother later married Morris Nelson and two daughters were born to this union. On June 30, 1938, Gladys was joined in marriage to Charles Denzer at the Assembly of God Church in Sauk Centre. Gladys was a homemaker all her married life and was a charter member of the Sauk Centre Assembly of God Church where she held the offices of secretary/treasurer of the Women's Missionary Council and Sunday School superintendent. She also held a hymn sing at the Sarepta Nursing Home and later at St. Michael's Nursing Home in Sauk Centre where she played the piano, sang, and worshiped with the residents until the age of 82. After Charles passed away in 2001, she continued to live in her home in Sauk Centre until she fell in the spring of 2002. She spent some time at St. Michael's Nursing Home and then at Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Sauk Rapids. She then went to live with her granddaughter, Tina Holmgren and family for two years. From there, she moved to Mound, where she lived with her niece, Marilyn Bosma and family until going into hospice at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, where she passed away. Gladys is survived by her daughters, Betty Denzer of St. Cloud and Anita (Dan) Saefke of Brooklyn Center; four grandchildren, Chuck McDougle, Tina (Michael) Holmgren, Scott (Anita) McDougle, and Loren (Carmen) Denzer; and six great-grandchildren, Dustin McDougle, Ashley McDougle, Taylor Holmgren, Tia McDougle, Jessica Kolstad, and Jennifer Kolstad. She was preceded in death by her parents and step-father; her husband, Charles; her brothers, Oscar, Manly, and Elmer Gunion; her sisters Mabel Upton, Helen Perlinger, and Mamie Perlinger; and her great-grandson, John Mathias McDougle. Urn bearers will be her grandchildren. The family would like to express a deep appreciation to the Mother of Mercy Nursing/Hospice staff, Sister Louise, and Chaplain Deb. Your loving care of our Mom and Grandma was exceptional. Thank you! Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Sauk Centre.
